Frequently asked questions and answers

Do the level 2 qualifications include CPR or is this an entry requirement?

No. The sector skills council withdrew the requirement for CPR to be included within course delivery in 2007.

No. CPR is not an entry requirement for the course(s).

A recommendation would be for instructors to achieve a First Aid at Work qualification (which includes CPR) after they have completed their assessment. CPR is usually a requirement for employment. Some employers offer training in this area.

Does the course fee include everything? Are there any other materials I would need?

Yes, all essential resources are provided within the course costs.
The course fee includes: All contact learning hours with tutor, all learning manuals, induction packs and books, Award Body registration and certification costs and assessment fees (when specified on the course information leaflets)

You would need to supply your own music for Exercise to Music courses (We will give you contact information). You will also need to provide your own paper and pens to make notes. You will also need to buy or provide your own refreshments. Once qualified, you would need to arrange your own insurance.

If I take all modules for ETM, does this mean I don’t have to re-take them again?

Yes. Once you have attended modules 1 and 3 (Module 1 Exercise and Fitness Knowledge and Module 3 – Health, Safety and Professionalism) and completed the assessment successfully, you would not have to retake these; these modules and the assessments are automatically accredited as valid and reliable evidence for prior achievement by the Award Body.

What does APA/L mean?

APA/L means Accreditation of Prior Achievement and Learning. This means if you have studied a particular area or have an existing qualification you may not have to re-study specific areas. However, you would need to go through an APA/L interview with the centre. In some instances, you may need to be re-assessed and also study further. There would be additional costs involved for the APA interview and any assessment. It would also be required for you to prove to the assessor how you were able to meet the specified assessment criteria by mapping your existing knowledge and qualifications to the criteria. The interview and assessment would incur an additional fee. It may sometimes be cheaper and quicker to re-take an area of study and assessment! Further information for APA/L and appropriate evidence is available on request.

Will I be qualified for employment?

Yes. All the listed CYQ qualifications are requirements for employment in a specific area. To work as a gym instructor you would need the gym instructor qualification. To work as an ETM instructor you would need the ETM qualification. To teach Aqua you would need the aqua/water based qualification.

Do I need work experience?

Some employers require experience. For ETM, there are often opportunities to register as a cover teacher initially and from this centres will check how you work with their customers, which often leads to them offering you a permanent class in the future.

Another way of getting experience is to set up and teach your own classes in a church hall.

For gym, there are usually employment opportunities straight away.

Is the stated 11 days for ETM course attendance? or is any home study?

10 days are attendance and 1 day is assessment. Home study will be recommended in addition to this. There is also a fair amount of homework – planning different sessions and practicing these sessions.

Do the course days vary?

Yes. Some courses are planned to run over weekends and some are planned to run during the week. The days and dates of all forthcoming courses are listed on the website.

Is it useful to have any teaching experience prior to attending the courses?

For the ETM and Gym course, it is advised that you have experience of attending ETM classes and/or working out in a gym, this generally makes your learning experience a little bit easier.
